Macca secretly gave the nod for Dangermouse remix

Paul McCartney stood up to his label to give hip hop stars the chance to remix Beatles hits.

Dangermouse came to them in 2006 wanting to produce his "Grey " album, a mash up of The Beatles "White " album and Jay Z "s "Black " album.

Macca says the label put up a fuss but he fought for the remix, describing it as a tribute.

He also said he wants more producers to sample The Beatles.

"It was really cool when hip hop started you would hear references in lyrics, you always felt really honoured.

It "s exactly what we did in the beginning - introducing black soul music to a mass white audience. It "s come full circle".

The music legend was talking as part of an interview for a Radio 1 documentary which explores The Beatles and Black Music, due to be aired next week
