25 years ago, hip-hop had a new hustle - mainstream music television
25 years ago this week, Yo! MTV Raps first aired. The show was
monumental for hip-hop in many ways. For one, it placed rap within a platform
that seemed impenetrable at the time, given the polarizing nature of the genre
early on. Hosts like Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover and Dr. Dre (the other Dr. Dre)
helped usher in a new wave of televised urban programming and by doing so made
history.
There were many fine moments on Yo! MTV Raps. Careers were made
there. Rappers still name check the show to date, citing it as one of the outlets
for them to learn about artists that influenced them. It was groundbreaking.
Check out the infamous Yo! MTV Raps documentary, and a very Happy 25th Anniversary
to the hip-hop show that topped all other hip-hop shows.
