Jay Z's Tidal To Start Streaming Movies

Jay Z is using his subscription-based streaming-music service Tidal to get into the movie business — and will soon be offering original films to subscribers, Page Six can exclusively reveal.

Multiple sources confirmed to us that the service is in negotiations with movie-industry executives, for a partnership to create films for Tidal, with a focus on the artists signed to the streaming service.

Tidal has already put in a request to Apple for approval to add movie streaming to their app, we’re told, and the service could be up and running as early as June.

One source told us, “Tidal has upset everybody in the music business, the labels, Apple and [Interscope founder] Jimmy Iovine, and now it is taking on Netflix and Hulu.

“The movie service will feature original content as well as acquired films. Tidal hopes to work with an indie studio or producer on a partnership to create original movies.”

We’re told that preliminary talks have been underway with the Weinstein Co., plus Tidal will also be working with other producers, including Irv Gotti, to acquire original movies.

The move will create movie stars out of the talent signed to Tidal.

Meanwhile, Kanye West has reportedly been developing a film script with Bret Easton Ellis, while Rihanna has already appeared in “Battleship” and recently voiced the lead in Dreamworks’ animated “Home.” Jay is also in talks about producing an upcoming movie.

Tidal hit its one-year anniversary this week.

The service boasts a reported 3 million members and 20 artist-owners, including Lil Wayne, T.I., Damian Marley, as well as Kanye, RiRi and Jay. Kanye’s latest album, “The Life of Pablo,” was streamed 250 million times in its first 10 days last month, and added a million new subscribers to the service. Beyoncé’s new album is expected to drop in the next two months.

Insiders also say that recent reports claiming Samsung was in talks to buy Tidal are false, and the talks were in fact over a marketing deal. Reps for Tidal and Jay declined to comment.
