Chance The Rapper has raised more than $60,000 through the Warmest Wintercampaign to provide coats to the homeless of Chicago. On Friday (December 25), the emcee announced the funds raised on Twitter.
'The #thirdmixtape didn't slide down the chimney,' Chance The Rapper writes, referencing his forthcoming project. 'In more important news, good people raised almost $60000 in 10 days for#WarmestWinter.'
The Warmest Winter initiative is a partnership with The Empowerment Plan, a Detroit organization fighting to end homelessness. The company, which employs homeless parents as seamstresses, hopes to expand to Chicago.
The campaign's goal is to raise $100,000 through January 13 to fund 1,000 EMPWR coats. Each coat can be transformed into a sleeping bag and duffel bag.
According to the Chicago Coalition For the Homeless, more than 125,000 people lived in homelessness in the Windy City during the 2014-2015 school year. Part of this statistic is created through information from Chicago Public Schools, which identified 20,205 homeless students.
Upon donating, people are entered into a raffle for a variety of prizes including tickets to a Chicago Bulls or Chicago White Sox game or tickets to a Chance The Rapper performance. For donating $100 to fund an entire coat, a person receives a limited edition poster and is entered in a raffle for a meet and greet with Chance The Rapper.
