McLyte Joins the Board of Trustees at Dillard

One can typically expect good weather and plenty of graduations come the month of May. MC Lyte got to partake in both yesterday afternoon as her first act as a member on the Dillard‬ University Board of Trustees in New Orleans, Louisiana.

The Hip-Hop legend’s new role will have her working alongside Dillard University Walter M. Kimbrough and will be using her Hip-Hop Sisters foundation to promote the new #EducateOurMen initiative.

“More than just a necessity, given the percentages of men to women at Dillard, immediately we just thought how can we raise the awareness of the education to be had at an HBCU [which] is like none other,” Lyte tells Black Enterprise.

“For me, there is no other school to do it with but, Dillard,” said Lyte, “Education gives one opportunity, gives an outlook and allows someone to dream of something better– of making their circumstances better, of providing for their families and providing for their children.”

Her first act underneath her new appointment was to oversee the graduating class of 2015 and they were equally gifted with a commencement speech from the iconic actor Denzel Washington, who also received an honorary degree during the ceremony.

Speaking of legends, the L-Y-T-E recently dropped her eight studio album titled just that, which can be heard via her app on Android or iPhone.
