Varyus Waise (Nick Florest) is a notable Brooklyn Rapper and Activist whose name captures both his music and his mission. Varyus Waise is an artist whos music offers the listener a nuanced portrait of both himself and his hometown.  Someone who wants the world to be a better place for others, but at the same time enjoys life pleasures and admit his own shortcomings. Varyus Waise, while having the type of name you might have seen in rap’s golden era, brings an exciting new perspective to concepts that have been within the culture, since its inception.

Varyus Waise has garnered comparisons to celebrated cult figures such as MF Doom and Black Thought. When asked which artist he sees as a peer, he likens himself to another young artist trying to find his way through a mad city, Kendrick Lamar. Also Varyus takes inspiration from Tupac Shakur saying the following about the globally revered emcee “2Pac inspired me most because he proved the duality of what it is to be human. To be a villain and hero, a saint and a sinner, all at the same time...”

Little Brother Syndrome, Varyus Waise debut project name is inspired by two distinct themes close to his heart. The album is about his ambition to grow as an artist, seeing himself as a “newbie.” He wanted to make sure he gave the listener a real album, unlike many fly by night artist who litter the internet with countless half bake ideas and disposable songs.  Little Brother Syndrome was worked on for over two years, displaying a rare craftsmanship within its beats and rhymes. Also the title speaks on the people he hopes to affect with his music his music, those young lives he captures in his songs. “You can't earn trust, without honesty. So I felt like sharing my story … People can understand better what I'm trying to do.”

Varyus Waise is not one just to rest on sloganeering have done work to both improve the lives of young people and the equally important work of raising their consciousness.  He is a co-host on Rise up Radio (WBAI-NY 99.5 FM), a community radio program with engages in educating youth about the issues that affect their lives.  Also as a college student at prestigious SUNY New Paltz, he ran a socio-political magazine. In addition, Varyus has years of experience working with nonprofits such as City Year and iMentor to reach at risk youth. Varyus explains what this work means for his own life and others by saying “being involved in a child's life can motivate them for change and positive growth in ways you can't imagine.”

Varyus Waise sees hip-hop as more than a passion, but rather an extension of his community work. Varyus says “My music is influenced by the service I've done in the inner city communities I've worked in. My aim is to be a healer through all my passions which are working with youth, music and writing.” Varyus Waise recognizes music has the ability to do more then give a voice to anger, frustration, and self destructive tendencies.  Instead when those talents are put in the hand of a skilled and compassionate artist, it can start the rewarding task of finding alternatives and offering solutions.  “I would want others to perceive me as a person who will champion the cause for human rights, but on a much more humane and relatable level.”
